She is

at first glance
a smallish brown
dog.
Kinda arb looking,
happy.
Tail tipped white.
Lineage largely
speculative,
politely referred to
as
a mixed breed.

Yet to experience
her,
is to truly live.
Joy abounds
as she terrorises
us early morning:
“Wanna play, or what?”

My constant shadow
on work from
home days:
“Are you going to eat that? I can help you out right now!”
I smile at her
polite sit,
perfectly poised
and ready
for any and
all adventure.

I know
that we don’t
deserve dogs.
Their love,
companionship
and wanting-to-be-with-us.
Their quirks and
sense of humour.
Even their grumpiness
and no-can-dos.

They are here
to
make us better,
or make it
better.
Or both.

So today’s a
great day
to slip
that good boy
or girl
an extra
treat or three.
And remember,
they do get
it right.
Life is for living
in the now.
So go
for that walk,
have that
treat,
mingle with
that stranger,
and spunk
out
on everyday
living.
