The kindness of strangers, part 471

I notice him

near instantly

as I walk in.

Silver fox,

tall,

open smile.

Holding organic yoghurt and sourdough bread.

A good combination

I muse,

and head for the

chocolate

display case.

We make small talk

in the queue

and as I attempt to pay

my watch freezes.

So sorry, I stutter,

I’ll just pop to the car and grab my bank card.

Our eyes meet

as he passes by in the parking

lot.

I’m on my way

back inside

to pay for

my chocolate

stash.

He smiles.

Back inside,

the cashier hands me

the paper bag.

Your friend paid for you,

he says,

moving on

to

serve the

next

customer.
