I’d been waiting

for a while

now

for the other

shoe

to drop.

See

shoes come in pairs,

after all,

and it’s best

to keep one’s

expectations

rooted,

in reality,

or even to pass

begin

and go directly

to disappointment jail,

and its favourite

chum, disillusionment.

And so I

watch

you

carefully,

for signs of your

mask slipping,

or God forbid,

my own

hitting the floor.

For you to

rush

to freedom,

to run away:

Ni!

Truth be told

this watching

fills me

with dread,

and the heartsore

from waiting

on a broken

heart to

arrive can

be

quite devastating.

And then

I pop into

my bedroom,

and you’ve made the bed,

just so.

And I realise that

perhaps

if we both manage

to keep a hold

firmly, on one shoe,

this pair may

hit the

ground

to quite a

different tune.
