Birthdays can be
complex.
On the happiness
and light
side of the
scale,
there’s cupcakes
and sprinkles,
presents and
joy.
There may also
be
neglect, or
indifference,
or simply
having nothing
to give,
or share.
These are
some of the
early years’ birthday
things.
And yet,
we move on,
we grow,
without that
pony, or puppy
or sense
of belonging.
As supposed
adults,
they may retain
their
same power:
flipping the
switch back to
those vulnerable
times…
Waiting for
other humans
to arrive,
only for
no-one to pitch,
being left out,
or simply
being considered
inconsequential.
Yet despite
this,
birthdays also
have the
power to
transform us:
an annual
life performance
appraisal,
perhaps?
A point to
consider how far
we’ve come,
what we hold
dear,
and also what
in our life
needs to
be chiselled
into a different,
more useful
shape,
or perhaps simply
put down,
and walked away
from, towards
something
better.
In my own
life,
birthdays boost
up the magic
quotient
beautifully,
and also the calories 😉
They also create
the space
for me to freely
and vocally
admire the
glorious humans
in my life.
So if it’s
your birthday
today,
I’d love to
encourage you
to consider
both the
yin and
the yang.
And if you do
happen to see
Cerberus,
even if only
in your
mind’s eye,
say “hi” to him
for me,
and perhaps
best to avoid patting
this head,
for he knows
we’ll see each other,
again soon.
